Tania Coletta's art celebrates the natural world. She is connected to that world in every facet of her life, from her drawings and paintings to her love of gardening and her desire to understand the synergy of plants and wellness. Her choice of the name Persephone Studio is an extension of that sense of connectedness.
Tania's artwork displays diversity in media and technique - tightly rendered drawings to impressionistic pastels and watercolors. The brightly colored palette she gravitates towards reflects the optimism that Tania embodies. - Steve Hamlin

I am moved by the beauty of each season and the cycles of life in its many incarnations. I am in love with color and its deep vibrational contrasts. My work is the expression of the passion and wonder I feel for the mystery of creation, and a way to communicate and share this love with others.

As a child I spent a lot of time wandering the woods and fields of my Lexington, Massachusetts home. My parents were both wonderful artists and a variety of materials was always available for my use in pursuing my strong interest in drawing and painting.

...my study of traditional herbal medicine brought me to classes at the New York Botanical Garden. I also studied at the Art Students League in NYC. But it was not until I moved with my husband a few years ago to rural western Massachusetts that I began to work more seriously as an artist. There is so much that inspires me here.

The seasons are very pronounced in the hilltowns of western Massachusetts. Having my own vegetable and flower garden, as well as a foodshare in a local farm, allows me to experience a deep connection with the earth and its cycles, reflecting a similar transformation within myself. This brings a sense of balance, as well as the inspiration to honor the beauty of what we take for granted - vegetables and fruits, flowers, plants and common creatures.

I am also inspired by what is invisible and inner-worldly. Sometimes an image lives powerfully in my imagination, or in dreams and I am compelled to reveal its presence.
|
|
Both inner and outer worlds have their own magnificent reality and it is my desire to explore more deeply the interface between them.

The Legend of Persephone (Per-se-phónē)
In Greek mythology, Persephone, the goddess of fertility and queen of the underworld, is the daughter of Demeter, the goddess of grain and fertility, and Zeus, the king of gods and god of sky and thunder. According to Olympian legend, Persephone was abducted by Hades, the god of the Underworld. Distraught by her abduction, Demeter put her whole being into searching for her lost daughter, causing the world to wither. Eventually, Helios, the sun god revealed Persephone's situation. At Zeus' insistence, Hades released Persephone to return to her mother, but not before tricking her into eating a pomegranate seed that would force her to return to the underworld for a season each year. Persephone is therefore identified with the changing of the seasons and with life, death and rebirth.
